When Scotty’d heard all the commotion, she’d come flying outside to see what was going on. Seeing Kash crumbled in the snow was almost her undoing.

Now, seeing him so pale, she had to fight to keep her fear at bay and her hands from shaking. “Nina will find her, I promise. Just stay still so I can check you for injuries,” Scotty said, her eyes roaming over his body, checking to see where or if he’d been hurt. She smoothed her freezing-cold hands over his stomach, fighting the urge to admire the flat surface.

But he grabbed her wrists, his hands covered in snow, his eyes wild. “I have to find Janet. She’s everything to me. Please!”

As she looked into his eyes under the fading light of late afternoon, something shifted in her. She had no explanation for the feeling. She didn’t even think she could describe it properly.

There was no word yet crafted for it—but the connection she briefly experienced from the touch of his hands existed.

It. Existed. With it came peace and a weird sense of belonging.

And that frightened her enough to fall back in the snow with a jolt, the cold powder seeping into her jeans.

Kash was up and running after Nina and Marty before she could blink an eye, calling Janet’s name with the sound of fear in his voice.

She’s everything to me… His words tore at her heart. She wanted to know why he felt that way.

“Scotty!” Wanda was at her side in seconds, lifting her up off the freezing-cold ground. “C’mon, honey. Let’s get you inside and warmed up.”

But she stood rooted to the ground, her legs shaky. “No. I want to help find Janet.”

“You’re in no condition to do any such thing,” Wanda scolded, her serene beauty now filled with fire. “Now let me help you to the house or I’ll carry you there myself.”

Scotty knew she was right. She knew she was jeopardizing her health with the possibility of catching a cold, which always turned into pneumonia in her case, but she didn’t like it.

She was so damn tired of being so damn tired.

When she’d been on her way back from the lab, Wanda the Babysitter in tow, she’d seen Kash running with Janet toward the edge of the woods, then she’d heard Janet yelp and snarl…

And she’d seen Nina grab the dog and literally launch her out of the way to make a run for Kash.

Both she and Wanda froze on the spot. Nina would just as soon make an idle threat as she would throw a dog.

They both knew something was horribly wrong, and when Darnell came barreling out of the house and sniffed the air. “Somethin’s not right, Doc. You guys go get help!”

He took off running after Nina, who’d hauled Kash over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes and began running into the woods.

Scotty ran toward the guesthouse, her breathing choppy, her legs wobbly, but she made it just in time to see Marty arrive in her big SUV.
